Do you struggle with managing your numerous receipts, bank statements, medical or legal paperwork and other important documents? If so, you are not alone! Although we have computers, smart phones, scanners and online tools, many people still find themselves bogged down under piles of paper on every available surface, and rarely are able to find what they need when they want. I know individuals who have their paperwork in neat piles in a closet or a box, but because there is no system in place, they can become overwhelmed when they need to find a particular document. This can be very stressful, especially when there is a sense of urgency, for instance a tax deadline or a family emergency. I am not a Professional Organizer but have friends and colleagues who are. I am in awe of them and their ability to have a special place for every piece of paper and item in their home and office. That is definitely not me!

However, I have developed a system that works well for me and may be helpful to others.

My 5 Tips to keep paperwork organized

  • Put all incoming mail in one area of your home- a wicker basket or 2 tiered tray on the counter works well
  • Keep a shredder handy or use a paper bag to put items in to be shredded
  • Use a desk top filing system and file papers right away in labeled files or scan and store electronically
  • Use a filing cabinet – 4 drawer preferably labeled with one drawer for tax documents, another for medical and legal papers and one for household receipts/bills/statements
  • Maintain a Master List - include location of documents, ie. safe deposit box, computer passwords

If you or someone you know is having difficulty with their paperwork, a Professional Organizer can be a wonderful resource. I highly recommend my esteemed colleagues, Claire Matekja and Jill Annis. They are both personable and compassionate individuals who work extremely well with their clients.

If assistance is needed with organizing financial paperwork and bill paying, a Daily Money manager can be an excellent choice. Please contact me for a free consultation to see how I can help.
